Morrison Memorial Heart & Stroke Pool Tournament

10th Annual Morrison Memorial Heart and Stroke Tournament
by Ron Tally

As president of the South Bruce Chapter of the Heart and Stroke I am often asked to go to events. I had the great honour of meeting a truly amazing woman Barb Labombard at the Morrison Memorial Heart and Stroke Tournament. Barb tells why this has become such a passion. In1983 Barb lost her mother at the age of 50 to a sudden massive heart attack., then in 1995 her father had bypass surgery after surviving a heart attack but died in the hospital post operatively. She decided after the death of her father that she needed to do something to help stop heart disease. She called the Heart and Stroke Foundation and became a volunteer canvassing door to door in Paisley, only to collect $100.00. She didn’t think this was enough and felt there had to be a better way to raise money. So Barb and her husband John joined forces with Wayne Peachman in March of 1997 to start the Morrison Memorial Heart & Stroke Pool Tournament.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the Tournament which is the longest running Pool Tournament in Ontario with 200 players participating for prizes as well as donating to a good cause. Teams came from as far away as Brampton to play pool on March 24th , 25th and 26th at the Sutton Park Inn and the Bruce Bar and Grill in Kincardine. Barb not only gets their money in registration fees but through her generosity of spirit persuades everyone to donate further to the cause. This resulted this year in $6485. being presented to Heart and Stroke Foundation. Over the last 10 years Barb and John Labombard and Wayne Peachman have raised $51,722. for the Heart and Stroke Foundation. We thank all participants and volunteers for their support.
